Measuring and Planning Impact: Scarpa’s Smart Report

2023

The company from Asolo — a leading brand in mountaineering, ski touring, climbing, trekking and high-altitude footwear — shares its sustainable evolution journey through its first Smart Report.

Since 2019, NATIVA has been supporting Scarpa in its strategic evolution toward a paradigm grounded in principles of economic, environmental and social sustainability.
The project began with the measurement of environmental and social impacts across all Group companies through the B Impact Assessment (BIA), a standard used by more than 240,000 companies worldwide, with the aim of identifying the strategic areas for improvement to focus on in the following years.

Following this first phase, in 2020 the company launched its “Green Manifesto”, a programmatic commitment that states Scarpa’s sustainability principles and translates them into concrete initiatives designed to align business activities with the highest international standards.

Now comes the Smart Report, through which Scarpa presents the results achieved and its future goals to all stakeholders — a commitment articulated across six areas:

S – Sustainability: fully aware that creating a 100% sustainable shoe is currently impossible, Scarpa is committed to improving the environmental and social profile of the entire product life cycle — from raw materials to end-of-life and recycling.

C – Care: the Group has committed to maintaining a customer satisfaction level above 60% (in 2021, repaired footwear increased by +39% compared to the previous year).

A – Air: since 2020, 100% of the electricity used by Scarpa in Italy has come from certified renewable sources, enabling the company to neutralize around 1,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. This commitment has been further strengthened since early 2021 through the exclusive use of low-impact biomass energy, combined with the emission savings already achieved through on-site photovoltaic systems. The goal is to reduce the energy footprint by at least 1% in both emerging and non-emerging countries.

R – Respect: the Group is committed to disseminating and having at least 75% of its suppliers — in emerging and non-emerging countries — sign its Code of Conduct; to ensuring diversity within the company, with at least 30% women employees in non-emerging countries and at least 50% in emerging countries; and to measuring diversity across the value chain by assessing the percentage of suppliers whose ownership belongs to under-represented groups.

P – Performance: Scarpa’s idea of performance extends beyond athletic results to embrace a broader philosophy. For this reason, the company is committed to sourcing at least 27% of sustainable raw materials out of the total used in products manufactured in-house, and to conducting tests aimed at reducing rubber consumption.

A – Authenticity: Scarpa’s next major commitment is to report its impacts through its first Impact Report, in compliance with Italy’s Benefit Corporation law (Law 208, 28-12-2015, paragraphs 376-384).

Scarpa has therefore embarked on a long-term strategy built around initiatives aimed at reducing the impacts of production processes and experimenting with recycled and more sustainable materials. These challenges will require continuous research and innovation, both within the company and across the entire sector, combining performance and sustainability to an ever greater extent.
