CLIMATE NEUTRALITY, GOVERNANCE, AND COLLECTIVE ACTION: THE SECOND CO2ALITION REPORT IS NOW PUBLIC

2025

Presented the second CO2alition Report

On November 26, 2025, at The Social Hub in Rome, the second CO2alition Report was presented during an important day of sharing and celebration. Launched on June 15, 2022, the initiative—promoted by NATIVA and the Foundation for Sustainable Development—now brings together 92 Italian companies, with a total turnover of €10 billion and more than 40,000 employees, who have chosen to formalize their commitment to climate neutrality.

From the state of the climate to COP30

The day began with a clear reading of the global scenario. While the goal of limiting warming to 2°C is still achievable, current policies (NDCs) are projecting an increase of +2.8°C, as confirmed by UNEP's Emission Gap Report 2025¹.

At the same time, COP30 in Belém failed to establish the need to abandon fossil fuels, and the slowdown in key countries, such as the United States, is putting the global economy at a crossroads.

The European context is also a cause for concern: in addition to its heavy dependence on fossil fuel imports (worth €375.9 billion in 2024 according to Eurostat²), the outcome of the regulatory debate risks weakening essential tools for the transition, such as the removal of the Climate Transition Plans initially envisaged by the CSDDD and CSRD.

¹ UNEP’s Emissions Gap Report 2025: Off Target finds that available new climate pledges under the Paris Agreement have only slightly lowered global temperature rise over the course of this century, leaving the world heading for a serious escalation of climate risks and damages.

² Imports of energy products to the EU down in 2024 (https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/en/web/products-eurostat-news/w/ddn-20250321-1)

Business must act: CO2alition's commitment

In this uncertain scenario, the business world is faced with a choice: wait and see or take action. Climate neutrality is not only a necessary commitment required by stakeholders, but also a lever of competitiveness for shareholders.

With this in mind, CO2alition companies have come together to celebrate a year of work that has created spaces for information, collaboration, and sharing co-designed with technical partners around five priority themes for decarbonization.

The CO2alition Report aggregates data from member companies, as well as highlights and open-source documents that the community has made available to all companies to accelerate the transition:
- Climate governance: climate neutrality in the articles of association: a guide to integrating climate objectives into corporate governance, divided by intensity and forcefulness;
- Carbon footprint and emission reduction targets: a guide to building an emissions inventory aligned with the most robust and widely used methodologies for scopes 1, 2, and 3;
- Transition away from fossil fuels: a reference document for the implementation of CERs and PPAs;
- Scope 3: the value chain: guidelines and best practices for engaging suppliers in the decarbonization of their value chain;
- Advocacy and stewardship: a Position Statement that brought the views of 120+ European companies and organizations on the importance of Climate Transition Plans to Brussels.
